Airfares rose nearly 5% in the first quarter, according to the Department of Transportation. By way of comparison, the DOT said airfare levels remained about 25% lower than the average ticket price in 1999, when adjusted for inflation. "Today's news about increasing fare levels should be kept in perspective," noted James May, ATA's president and CEO. "Not only are the airlines nowhere near recovering from devastating losses, airfares have not come close to keeping pace with inflation."
