More than 800 companies that ship fragile or time-sensitive goods have joined a federal program allowing them to screen their own air cargo, rather than depend on airlines or freight forwarders. Pfizer said it was a "very simple choice" to get certified for security screening, because pharmaceutical shipments could be compromised by heat or mishandling. Companies such as Pfizer don't have to buy expensive cargo screening machines like those used by the airlines. Instead, they train their employees in security procedures and ensure that goods are tamper-proof from packing to arrival at the airport.
