A year into its "Greener Skies" initiative, Alaska Airlines reports a 35% emissions reduction using Required Navigation Performance, a satellite-based technology that allows for more efficient landings. Alaska has equipped all its aircraft with the necessary avionics and currently has federally approved RNP procedures in place at 23 airports. The company estimates it could save 2.1 million gallons of fuel annually if RNP approaches were available for every flight.
